The three men, part of the Wild Bunch made famous by Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, felt no need to mask their faces in broad daylight. Two posses of lawmen spent three days searching for the culprits, but the robbers had escaped to Wyoming and later Texas. A few months later, a photo of the Wild Bunch dressed in their finest was sent to the bank from Fort Worth, Texas, along with a note of thanks for the gold. The robbery quickly became a Nevada legend. Nearly years later, Winnemucca continues its annual celebration of Butch Cassidy Days, despite recent evidence that proves Cassidy and the Kid never set foot in the bank that day.
